NIVEA Celebrates 100th Anniversary with Rihanna

Thanks to NIVEA, I had the chance to go see Rihanna perform at the Nassau Coliseum on July 19th as their imbedded blogger. Now, while Rihanna is often on my playlist at the gym, most of the concerts I usually attend are of the indie rock persuasion. But I had no doubt she would put on an amazing show and was curious to learn more about her partnership with NIVEA who is celebrating their 100 year anniversary. So my guest and I grabbed a can of Twisted Tea at Penn Station and headed out on the LIRR to Long Island from NYC.

As soon as we arrived at the coliseum, we made our way to the NIVEA tent where they had a tattoo artist on hand to give special tattoos designed by Rihanna—ok, ok, it was a fake tattoo, but I wanted to be sure to be as festive as possible for the show. So after getting my new wrist tattoo, we headed in for the show. Seated just seven rows from the stage, we had fantastic views of Rihanna.

Rihanna was amazing—her stage presence was unlike most I’ve seen (and I’ve even seen Gaga—albeit, when she was still an unknown, but still!). And she looked incredible, speaking very well to her being the face of NIVEA.

The show was a total crowd pleaser…just when I thought she’d surely sang all the song I knew, she’d come out with another hit. In fact, as the show ended I couldn’t figure out what song she could possibly come out with for her encore because she seemed to have covered them all. Boy was I wrong, suddenly on stage appeared a guy and quickly we realize it’s Kanye West! Talk about the surprise appearance to top all surprise appearances at a show. The two of them performed All of the Lights followed by Run This Town. Rihanna then closed us out with Umbrella and left all of Nassau Coliseum feeling satisfied—what more could we have wanted from this show?!

As we left the concert the NIVEA team was right there hanging out samples of NIVEA Creme, which also had coupons for product and for a free download of Rihanna’s song California King Bed.

NIVEA is also hosting a contest currently for a lucky winner to go to Prague to see Rihanna preform there—something I know I’m going to enter for, and believe me, you should too. The Rihanna show combined with the VIP treatment NIVEA offers is something not to be missed!

After seeing Rihanna and Kanye perform this live earlier this week, I kinda can’t get enough. It’s also the perfect song as I head down to the shore today.

A Search for the Best New York Coffee

As I look for ways to entertain myself in the city this winter, I was inspired by a recent issue of Time Out New York, as they ranked some of the best cups of coffee in the city.

I must say, the little bit of time I spent living in the Bay Area sculpted my palate for delicious coffee. I think it’s no secret that San Francisco is known for having some great coffee. But when I moved back to New York, I was a little unsure where to look for quality brew. So this article from TONY has helped give me some ideas on where to look!

With that I’m going to embark on a bit of a tour and go check out all of the spots and feedback with my thoughts and hope to ultimately figure out where to find the best coffee in the city.

In the meantime, I’ll just keep ordering my coffee from San Francisco.

To Check-In; Or To Not Check-In (At Work)

Sometime last year, I fell in love with FourSquare. I am somewhat hooked on it, as I can’t help trying my best to earn a new badge, or beat out my friends on the leaderboard for the week. And of course to become the mayor—I’m currently the mayor of my gym and my liquor/wine shop (yes, I see the irony).

So when it really began to take off this year, as more of my friends joined, and my favorite places started to participate with specials, I was of course thrilled.

The thing I wonder about with FourSquare, (or SCVNGR or any other geo location apps that offer perks), do you think it’s fair for people who work in public locations to “check-in” at work?

It seems that it’s a bit unfair for the consumer, who would be seeking to become the mayor, but stands no chance, because an employee checks-in five days a week.

Should businesses monitor or have a policy against work check-ins from employees, in order to let their customers reap the benefits? My opinion is yes, but I’m also not someone who works in a public location (i.e. Sephora)—nor do I check-in at work either way—so I don’t know that perspective. But I have noticed at many stores, restaurants and bars that it is an employee that is the mayor.

So I’d love to hear the feedback of the people who do work at public locations and choose to check-in.

I suppose the reality is, if the business is involved in a social media campaign that includes a geo location app, they would be wise enough to monitor such activity—meanwhile, locations that haven’t jumped on the social media bandwagon aren’t utilizing it to it’s fullest for it to matter who the mayor is.

I just wanted to share with you a tradition from the campus of my alma mater, Ball State University: Happy Friday Guy.

This guy would scoot all over campus on Friday afternoons, yelling “HAPPY FRIDAY”. Perhaps other campus’ have a HFG too?

The call came across as great news, as you were reminded that the weekend had in fact arrived…or was at least close. Especially for those long, drawn-out weeks (such as the one I’m having), it was the perfect way to put you in a new mindset for the weekend.

So with that, Happy Friday!!! You’re almost there.

Thanksgiving Misfits

This year I decided to stay in New York for the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s not the first time I’ve had a Thanksgiving away from family, but I still miss them and find that I’m a bit homesick today.

Thankfully I have a great group of friends and NYC-JC to host us for a couple of nights and one delicious turkey dinner.

Other fun components of having the holiday away from family are having two nights of slumber parties at the luxurious NYC-JC hotel, getting to choose the menu, the meal time (a late dinner with a dress code), implementing holiday themed cocktails…and experimenting in cooking my first turkey!

I’ll post about my Thanksgiving celebration evening, the food and the company as the night go.
